What is Dichroic Glass?
Dichroic glass contains multiple micro-layers of metal oxides (gold, silver, copper, titanium, chromium, aluminum, zirconium, magnesium, silicon). These oxides are vaporised on to glass (either clear or black, smooth or textured) using a high voltage electron beam in a vacuum chamber. This coating three to five millionths of an inch creates a dichroic optical fllter that transmits (passes) certain wavelengths of light and reflects (blocks) other wavelengths of light. There is no inherent color in the metal oxides, it is the manipulation of light that produces the spectacular color. The glass artist can now use this dichroic glass to make jewellery. Dichroic glass is cut and layered, fired in a kiln, cooled slowly, reshaped and fired again. This may be done several times to produce the desired effects that you see. With this complex process individual results can never be exactly reproduced, each piece of dichroic glass is unique.
